Salinisation effects on freshwater macrophyte growth and establishment in coastal eutrophic agricultural ditches

چکیده

The presence of submerged macrophytes is a desired environmental target for coastal freshwater ecosystems. Maintaining rich community these species can be challenging as salinisation by sea-level rise poses an increasing threat to ecosystem integrity. We tested the effect on growth and germination experimentally using field sediment. In 56-day experiment, macrophyte was exposed salinity treatments representing seasonal water management scenarios (a decreasing from 1,500 300 mg NaCl/L, stable NaCl/L NaCl/L), crossed with simulating periodic turbidity pulses. All except Elodea nuttallii grew poorly saline eutrophic sediment, reflecting challenges in systems. Surprisingly, highest biomass achieved scenario NaCl/L. second field-collected sediments were incubated at (representing summer winter scenarios), capacity existing seedbank quantified. Most germinated seedlings did not reach maturity irrespective treatment. This indicated that sediment salinity, rather than column determined seedling establishment success. Interestingly, established characteristic habitats, thus indicating maladaptation seedbank. Our results show mismatch between high level overlaying may hamper growth. Furthermore, freshwaters should evaluated carefully. nuttalli, which has wide tolerance range nutrients outperformed other our study. Thus, similar traits most successful establishing stands eutropic wetlands.

Effects of agricultural practices on organic matter degradation in ditches

Agricultural practices can result in differences in organic matter (OM) and agricultural chemical inputs in adjacent ditches, but its indirect effects on OM composition and its inherent consequences for ecosystem functioning remain uncertain. This study determined the effect of agricultural practices (dairy farm grasslands and hyacinth bulb fields) on OM degradation by microorganisms and invert...

Can macrophyte harvesting from eutrophic water close the loop on nutrient loss from agricultural land?

Eutrophication is a major water pollution issue and can lead to excessive growth of aquatic plant biomass (APB). However, the assimilation of nutrients into APB provides a significant target for their recovery and reuse, and harvesting problematic APB in impacted freshwater bodies offers a complementary approach to aquatic restoration, which could potentially deliver multiple wider ecosystem be...

Effects of Air Contact on Growth, Inorganic Carbon Sources, and Nitrogen Uptake by an Amphibious Freshwater Macrophyte.

Callitriche cophocarpa Sendtner is a heterophyllous amphibious macrophyte that produces apical rosettes of floating leaves. The importance of air contact for inorganic carbon and N uptake and for growth was investigated. Plants were grown with the floating rosette in contact with air of various humidities (10, 50, and >90% relative humidity) and with the submerged parts in N-free water at 350 [...

EFFECTS OF WOOD ON THE GROWTH OF LIGNICOLOUS FRESHWATER FUNGI

The addition of cottonwood and ash sapwood powder to YPSSl2 medium influenced the mycelial growth of 13 species of freshwater lignicolous Ascomycetes and Hyphornycetes. These species fall into three groups with respect to their responses to the presence of leached or non-leached wood powder. Neither wood type showed strong inhibitory effect on the mycelial growth of the species. Leaching di...
